And even if you could suspend disbelief about the excessive drinking and the ability to be a competitive athlete, reading about it for chapter after chapter is not worth the time! The main characters don't even meet each other until you've read about the drinking and sex and partying for about 4 chapters, and nothing else seems to happen until the "big event" of an ice rink being shut down. There is no possible way to maintain the rigorous schedule of practices and games on top of maintaining a high enough GPA to be eligible to play AND be drinking until you black out every night. It was so incredibly uninteresting and unbelievable. From the start of the book until the point I gave up, the only action taking place was drinking to excess and having or talking about having sex. The characters were whiny and one dimensional, the plot (what plot there was?) dragged and was not entertaining. This book looked interesting, but was actually so incredibly bad I had to stop listening after 4 chapters.

Ladin vividly describes forty years of gender dysphoria, of feeling disembodied, detached, dehumanized. In many ways, it got worse: her wife and children rejected her, her suicidal ideation intensified, and for a time she lost everything.Īnd yet, even without the redemptive last chapter which gives the book its title, one can still say that even if life got harder when she transitioned, it also, at least, began. For Ladin, life didn’t get better when she began her gender transition in 2007. Joy Ladin’s lyrical and thoughtful new memoir, Through the Door of Life, adds another before-and-after metaphor to the mix, and yet its searing narrative undercuts any such simplifications. And yet, like our other metaphors – Coming Out, Transitioning – It Gets Better suggests a linearity that is at odds with LGBTQ experience, even as it also, helpfully, offers hope. We queers know this we know that sometimes it gets worse before it gets better, and that sometimes, it gets worse again, and that other times, some days you just have to get through one at a time. “It Gets Better” is an oversimplification. ‘Through the Door of Life: A Jewish Journey between Genders’ by Joy Ladin It would be great to see this book made into film. I also like how it speaks to several issues in our society today such as police brutality and how we treat our war veterans. The way it captures the relationship between mother and daughter speaks volumes. Please continue writing books like this that carry a wonderful message in them. I would be looking forward to more work from you. Your writing convinced me to feel the characters like I was in their places. What I liked the most about Daughter was the poetic style that you adopted to write it. Not only that, before we started the book, our course instructor gave us a brief introduction about you as an author as well as your personal life, which made me even more excited to read your work. Once I started reading the book, I could not put it down as every chapter, every page had something that kept me reading. I must say, Daughter showed me so many perspectives of life and left me with numerous messages to learn from. We also had Socratic seminars on every chapter of the book in class. As part of our Literature and Writing course, our course instructor assigned us the book Daughter written by you. I am writing this letter to acknowledge your work. IsPublicPerformanceAllowed False languages Kurosawa's movies always look great, but aside from his other Shakespeare adaptation Ran, this might be his best-looking movie. More than any other Macbeth adaptation, Throne of Blood oozes style. Every time she's on screen, she steals the show. Speaking of eerie, the evil witch that tells Macbeth and Miki their futures is honestly one of the creepier things that you can find in a pre-1960s movie. Every time she's on screen, it feels like something bad is about to go down. This version of Lady Macbeth is every bit as sneaky and deceiving as her Scottish counterpart, but Yamada plays her with more of an eerie quietness than usual. Sound like Macbeth yet? Let's not forget this film's Lady Macbeth, Lady Asaji Washizu, played chillingly by Isuzu Yamada. What follows is a cautionary tale, chronicling the rise of a man whose power-hungry nature would eventually be his downfall. The two return home, where all the witch's predictions come true. During this journey, he is accompanied by his friend, General Miki ( Akira Kubo), whose son is predicted to eventually become Lord. Throne of Blood follows Taketoki Washizu, a general who encounters an evil witch ( Chieko Naniwa) that tells him he will soon be the Lord of Spider Web's castle. Her mother, however, had a specific destiny in mind for her daughter: compete to become the next Empress. But Mari was born somewhat plain, and without the ability to shift completely, so her clan has long seen her as something lesser. Her specific clan are known as the Animal Wives, beautiful women who can turn into terrifying monsters and enjoy marrying men, then stealing their wealth. Mari is a yōkai, a type of paranormal creature. This cover is a nice nod at the Japanese culture of the story within, but … it’s otherwise kind of boring? It looks a little too stock photo, like it could too easily be the cover of a Japanese history textbook.
